GLOBALSTAR MARINE KIT
“Satellite or Cellular, Above or Below Deck”
To adapt their phones for marine use Globalstar USA and
NavCom Digital have
developed a customized Marine Kit. Easily installed, the system was designed so
that cruisers can enjoy the versatility of a portable phone on deck and ashore,
while also allowing for convenient use of both satellite and cellular service in
the comfort of a protected, interior environment such as a navstation or
pilothouse. The Marine Kit makes it easy to use a Personal Computer (PC) or
Personal Digital Assistant (PDA) to access the Internet, send e-mail, or fax.
The Globalstar Marine Kit combines the Globalstar Mobile Kit (GCK-1410) with
special antenna adapters and cables to provide for an easy installation with the
greatest variety of mounting options for any vessel. The Marine Kit allows
convenient mounting of the Qualcomm built tri-mode handset (GSP-1600) in a mount
connected to the Globalstar Electronic Module (GEM) or “black box”. The GEM can
be mounted in any convenient area near the phone. The GEM also connects the
corded privacy handset, hands-free microphone and speaker to the external marine
satellite antenna and optional marine cellular antenna. A 6-foot serial data
cable (RS232) is provided for easy connection to a PC or PDA. The entire system
is powered by ship’s 12 volt DC.
The Globalstar Marine Kit also includes a marine adapter (GMA-2003) for the
omni-directional satellite antenna that allows for mounting on a standard marine
1-inch male threaded pipe mount. A variety of pipe mounts are available to fit
virtually any marine installation. An 16-foot satellite antenna cable is
provided with a 30, 45 or 80-ft. cable available as an option. An optional
Shakespeare 4-foot fiberglass long-range marine cellular antenna also using a
standard 1-inch mount is available that will accommodate digital as well as
analog cellular service on the same phone.
